CVC Definition
CVC = consonant-vowel-consonant. A CVC word has three sounds: it starts with a consonant, has a single short vowel in the middle, and ends with a consonant. Examples: c-a-t, b-e-d, p-i-g, h-o-t, s-u-n.
Key traits: 3 letters (usually 3 sounds), one short vowel (/æ ɛ ɪ ɒ ʌ/), fully decodable. That is why CVC is the first real reading milestone after letter sounds.

CVC vs CVCC / CCVC / CVCe
- CVC (cat): 3 sounds, start here.
- CVCC (fast, sank): adds an ending consonant/blend — next step.
- CCVC (frog, plan): adds a beginning blend — next step.
- CVCe (cake, hope): silent-e makes the vowel long — after blends.
Rule: master one vowel's CVC set to 90%+ accuracy before adding blends. Sequence details in our phonics guide.
